Scrabboli

Scrabboli is a browser-based single-player word game inspired by the classic board game Scrabble. Built with Next.js, React, and MongoDB, it brings the familiar tile-placement mechanics of the original game into a modern web application. The game features a fully interactive 15×15 board with all classic special fields — double and triple letter scores, double and triple word scores, and a marked center start field. Players draw tiles from a bag of 102 letter tiles, each with their original point values, and place them on the board to form valid words. The rack holds up to seven tiles at a time, and players can return individual tiles or their entire hand back to the rack, swap tiles with the bag, or use wildcard joker tiles that can represent any letter. Word validation checks that placed tiles form a consecutive, connected word in a single direction, and that every word docks correctly onto existing tiles on the board after the first move. All words are validated against a German word list. Scoring follows the original Scrabble rules, including special field multipliers, and a bonus is awarded for playing all seven tiles in a single turn. Player progression is handled through a lightweight soft-login system: players register with a username that is stored in MongoDB, and a player ID is persisted in localStorage for automatic recognition on return visits. The application tracks each player's game history, allowing them to view completed and ongoing games from a personal dashboard.

Case Study

The goal of Scrabboli is to deliver a fully functional, browser-based single-player implementation of the classic Scrabble board game. The project focuses on translating the complete rule set — including board layout, tile mechanics, word validation, and scoring — into a responsive and intuitive web application. Beyond the core gameplay, the project aims to establish a persistent player experience through a lightweight account system backed by a MongoDB database, allowing players to track their game history over time. The technical foundation is designed to be extensible, with the architecture ready to support multiplayer functionality in a future development phase.

The Team

  • Olivia Belu

Cake decorator with a mathematical background — finding the perfect match between technology and creativity. After studying mathematics and working as a cake decorator, web development turned out to be the space where both worlds finally meet. Scrabboli was a chance to dive deep into game logic: thinking through every rule and edge case from the ground up, while applying everything learned throughout the course — React, Next.js, CSS, and working with Mongo DB — in one cohesive project.
