StreamScout

StreamScout is a full-stack web application built as a capstone project, connecting a user's Steam library with Twitch's live-streaming ecosystem. Users log in with their existing Steam account via OpenID — no separate registration required — and land on a library view showing every game they own, searchable and sortable by last played, total playtime, or name. Games can be favourited for quick access, and clicking into any game opens a detail page showing that game's achievement progress, a live "currently playing" player count pulled from Steam's Web API, and a real-time list of Twitch streams for that game, sortable by viewer count, paginated, and filterable by language, with a direct link to watch on Twitch.

Beyond a user's own library, the home page surfaces wider discovery content sourced from both platforms: Coming Soon and Most Wishlisted panels rank upcoming and highly anticipated Steam titles, a Now Streaming panel highlights live streams for the user's favourited games specifically, and a Trending on Twitch panel shows the most-watched streams on Twitch overall. On desktop these all render simultaneously around the library grid; on mobile, where that much content at once doesn't fit well, the same information is reorganised into a dedicated Home / Library / Twitch tab layout.

The backend is a Spring Boot (Java) service backed by MongoDB, integrating the Steam Web API and Twitch's Helix API; the frontend is a React and TypeScript single-page app. The project was built iteratively, in small, independently demoable feature increments.

Case Study

StreamScout's goal is to close the gap between owning games on Steam and knowing who's actually playing or streaming them on Twitch, removing the need to manually search Twitch category by category for each game you own. It aims to give players a single dashboard that combines their personal library with live, contextual information — who's streaming, how many people are playing right now, and what's worth watching or wishlisting next. Just as importantly, it served as a capstone exercise in integrating two real third-party APIs (Steam and Twitch) into one cohesive, well-tested full-stack application, built incrementally through small, demoable feature slices.

The Team

  • Maximilian TofeldePortfolio

Max came from a musical and game dev background and wanted a jumpstart into backend programming. During the Java Bootcamp, he could gather deep knowledge about the whole pipeline from writing the first line of code, to finalizing the fullstack app with CD/CI on Render.
