From Career Transition to AWS Cloud Computing: David’s Journey

Meet David, a programmer and IT professional from Berlin, who graduated from our AWS program. Originally from Ghana, David was unemployed and looking for his next professional opportunity. Thinking of his future prospects, he decided to go all in on cloud computing, and master new skills in this in-demand field. David’s number 1 motivation was the outcome: the benefits he’ll gain for his career.

My name is David, I’m from Ghana, and I live in Germany (five years in Berlin). I was in Stuttgart before I moved to Berlin. I have an IT background; I did my first degree in project analysis and computer programming, and my second degree is information technology. I was working and I lost my job, so I’m like, I wanna use this opportunity to study, to further my studies. I did some research and I found out cloud computing is kind of the trend now, and I wanted to divert in that direction, that’s why I chose this bootcamp.

How has your experience at our bootcamp been so far?

This is my third week, and I’m quite impressed. Because I learned a lot in three weeks, and I see that… I wouldn’t believe that by myself I could have learned that much in three weeks. So being in a bootcamp with other people, you learn without knowing you’re learning that much.  So I think after two weeks when I checked out the slides and how much we’ve covered, I was shocked. I’m like, “wow, we’re going very fast”. So I think it’s kind of inspiring to push it when you are in a bootcamp. Then when you do self learning, and to prepare yourself, I think it’s very difficult.

What do you like the most about the bootcamp?

You find people that are almost in the same situation as you. Once you guys are almost in the same situation, you get almost the same vision. So it’s easy to communicate and get advice from each other and support each other towards the direction that you are all heading towards. I think that’s the good part of it, that you interact with people who are professionals, who have the same interests as you. And it makes it easy for you to make good connections. And if you love what you choose, that fact that you see people also getting interested into the same field.

Why did you choose cloud computing?

Why cloud computing? The world is going cloud, so people are moving… It's like, cloud is trending.

I did some research about where I want to go, why I want to go there, what is the outcome for the future when I choose this direction. What is the outcome? I think that’s one of the most important things. And when I read, I saw that cloud is really the future – even though it’s existing right now – but in the future it’s gonna be bigger. So I wanna be part of the world of cloud.

Why did you choose an intensive bootcamp?

When you’re a professional, and you want to catch up, you want it fast. You don’t want to waste more time. So I think when you choose a bootcamp, you have a specific time really predefined – you know that you have a three month bootcamp, or a four month bootcamp, so it makes you focus only for that period. I think if you go to maybe a university, or you try to go and further your studies at a university, it will take you a much longer time, and professionals don’t really like to spend more time studying again. A bootcamp is like a kind of shortcut where you get everything, you learn everything, and then you kick into the job market again.

How did you hear about this bootcamp?

I did a lot of research concerning the different bootcamps. I read some reviews on the bootcamps, and I talked to somebody who was already attending a bootcamp here; I think he was doing data analysis. So to confirm, and then I decided to go for it.

What job would you like to have when you graduate?

Working in the cloud computing market. Probably working with the company to manage instances and help develop some cloud instances like that. But I want to be in the domain that I studied, because I want to make a career in it. I think it wouldn’t be good that I studied cloud, and when I finish I go and work in a different field. So I really want to be on that path.
