Have you lost your job or are you about to become unemployed? No need to panic! With the right documents and a little preparation, you can apply for unemployment benefit quickly and easily. This article will tell you everything you need to know.

What do I need to apply for unemployment benefit?

  • You will need the following documents to apply for unemployment benefit:

  • A valid identity card or passport

  • Your national insurance number

  • Your unemployment certificate

  • Your last two payslips

  • Bank statements for the last three months

  • For foreigners: Residence permit and work permit if applicable

Important: The exact requirements may vary depending on the federal state and your individual situation. It is therefore advisable to check with your local employment agency in advance.

How do I submit the application?

You can apply for unemployment benefit either in person at your local employment agency or online via the service portal of the Federal Employment Agency.

Personal application:

  • Make an appointment with your local employment agency in advance to avoid waiting times.

  • Bring all the necessary original documents with you.

  • Fill out the application together with an employee of the Federal Employment Agency.

Online application:

  • Register on the service portal of the Federal Employment Agency.

  • Complete the online application and upload the required documents.

  • Submit the application electronically.

Important: After submitting the application, you will receive a confirmation of receipt. As soon as your application has been processed, you will receive a notification by post.

Deadlines and dates:

  • Register as unemployed on the first day of your unemployment at the latest.

  • Submit your application for unemployment benefit within four weeks of registering as unemployed.

Tip: The earlier you submit your application, the faster you will receive your unemployment benefit.
